Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas
This monastery is built on the top of a small rock and is the first church visitors encounter on their way from Kastraki to Meteora. The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas is a miracle of architecture that was named after the place where it was erected. The prevailing weather conditions, as well as the bright spot from which it emerges, seem ideal for those who need to keep body and spirit in peace.
On our way upwards, we can stop at the Monastery of Agios Antonios that is of significant importance. This is where the oldest frescoes were discovered and where valuable objects and manuscripts of the monastery were found.
A strangely-shaped rock is what offered a unique character to the catholicon of the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos that was painted by Theofanis Sterlitzas, a work that was the oldest this famous painter had ever created. As it is said, he was not just a painter, but a monk. Outside the Guest House, the view from the elevated plateau is breathtaking, while visitors can also see the ruins of monasteries dating back to the first time pilgrims stepped on this place.
